In this early piece on Weblogs, Shirky identifies the problem that is mentioned in the introduction to this week – What happens when there are no barriers to publishing?
His answer? Publishing becomes financially worthless…

Anderson points to the way that traditional media models artificially truncate what is available for audiences in terms of creative work. His term for the niche model of audience that has emerged through the Internet has become a part of the everyday reality of digital economics.

This is the piece where Kelly lays down the argument for generative value in a little more depth than is covered here. As noted, some of the ideas do not initially appear to apply to the written word on the Web, but it is worth thinking through how they might be applied to text-based publishing.
