Shirky, C. (2002). Weblogs and the Mass Amateurization of Publishing. Retrieved October 13th, 2009, from http://shirky.com/writings/weblogs_publishing.html.

Anderson, C. (2004). The Long Tail. Retrieved September 9th, 2009, from http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/tail.html.
Anderson points to the way that traditional media models artificially truncate what is available for audiences in terms of creative work. His term for the niche model of audience that has emerged through the Internet has become a part of the everyday reality of digital economics.
Kelly, K. (2008). Better Than Free. Retrieved October 24th, 2009, from http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/kelly08/kelly08_index.html.
This is the piece where Kelly lays down the argument for generative value in a little more depth than is covered here. As noted, some of the ideas do not initially appear to apply to the written word on the Web, but it is worth thinking through how they might be applied to text-based publishing.
I needed to write an article creating generative value so I did that on Sunday Photographer here: Some Photographers are Magicians (yet not in a good way)
